If you’ve taken a chance or your contraception has failed, you could be at risk of getting pregnant.

Emergency contraception is a safe, effective and responsible method of preventing pregnancy when regular contraception has failed, has forgotten to be taken or no contraceptive methods were used at all. If you act quickly, emergency contraception will usually prevent pregnancy.

At Lombard Pharmacy we have two Emergency contraceptive piIls: the progesterone pill, Norlevo and the ulipristal pill, ellaOne. Both act by preventing or delaying ovulation, preventing fertilisation.

The progesterone emergency contraceptive pill can be taken up to 72 hours (three days) after unprotected sex, while the ulipristal emergency contraceptive pill can be taken up to 120 hours (five days) after unprotected sex. However both methods are more effective the sooner they are taken.

The ulipristal emergency contraceptive pill (ellaOne) is the most effective emergency contraceptive pill available.

Emergency contraception is more effective the sooner you take it after having unprotected sex.
